Social dancing, or the practice of exchanging dance partners frequently, is a significant feature of salsa. In a social setting, it is bad etiquette to turn down a dance offer unless there are extenuating circumstances. Hence, it is common to meet and dance with more than ten different people in a night.

Due to the social nature of this dance, people on the salsa scene are generally welcoming. This has given way to a close-knit community that is passionate about the dance, with many often volunteering to organise salsa parties and events.
